Vickie Orth Obituary

On the 13th of April 1941, Vickie Dianne (Taylor) Edie Orth was born in Oakland, Iowa in her great grandmother’s home.  She was the first child of Charles and Jeanne Edie.  At 83 years of age, Vickie passed away from this life on the 11th of July 2024.

Vickie grew up with her parents, two brothers, and one sister. Their parents taught them the value of family at a young age.  The family gatherings at Christmas time were some of the most memorable.  It was not uncommon for fifty or more extended family members to celebrate together on Christmas Eve and other holidays.  Vickie’s famous homemade cabbage rolls were always expected at Christmas, and she never failed to have them prepared for her family.

The family moved from Iowa to Kansas when Vickie was nine years old. She attended elementary and middle school at Wide Awake Country School located near Liberal, Kansas.  She attended high school in Liberal where she graduated in 1958. The family lived at the Northern Natural Gas Plant community housing and shared many memories of growing up there.

In 1961, she had her first child, Jo Lee.  She quickly added to her family with the birth of Cathy in 1962 and Kristi in 1963.  She made many sacrifices to provide for her children even if it meant working double shifts to keep a roof over their heads.  She did, however, have to make a hasty exit from one of their homes after Cathy and Kristi decided to turn the garage into a swimming pool, only to discover the garage door would only hold back a few inches of water.   Her family was everything to her and she was everything to them.

After remarrying in 1972, the family moved to Turpin, Oklahoma and lived on a farm.  Being an animal lover, she had always dreamed of living on a farm.  She had nearly every farm animal imaginable where each animal, including the cows and pigs, had a name.  She raised a crow from the nest and taught it to speak.  Jethro even learned a few inappropriate terms and might call you something other than your name when you walked by him!

Most of her career was in the trucking industry.  Her first trucking job was at National Beef, but she soon was moved to National Carriers with a promotion to dispatcher. After moving to Tecumseh, Oklahoma in the early 80’s, she continued to work in the same business line and retired at the age of 77 from Gilbert and Son’s Trucking.  She was loved by every driver and had many nicknames including Mom, BOB, and Mean Old Logbook Lady.

Vickie’s grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy.  She enjoyed spending time with them including traveling across two states to see them graduate high school and college. She religiously followed their many accomplishments with great pride.

Vickie was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Jeanne Edie; step-brother, Duane Taylor; and other parents, Chester and Alta Mae Taylor.

She is survived by three children, Jo Lee Curtis of Midwest City, Ok, Catherine Brock of Tecumseh, Ok, and Kristi and husband Tindle Ramon of Spearman, TX. Beloved grandchildren, Amber and Dustin King, Nicole and Eric Neumeier, Ryan and Erika Ramon, Joshua Matney, Lindsey and Steven Tellier, Tyler Matney, and Dillion Curtis.  She was blessed with eleven great grandchildren Brooklyn, Harper, and Liam King; Preston, Finn, Scarlett, and Charlie Neumeier; Paisley and Canaan Ramon; Adellen Felkins, and Elijah Tellier. She is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-laws and one sister and brother-in-law: Tom and Kathy Edie, Roxie and Dick Gilpin, and Mike and Carolyn Edie.  She is also survived by a very dear friend, Ronnie Curtis, and numerous nieces and nephews.
