Thomas Cummings, Sr. Obituary

Every Saturday in the fall for the past 45 years without a doubt, you would know where Tom Cummings would be. 30 miles west of his home sitting in Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium watching his beloved OU Sooners.

Thomas Lee Cummings passed from this life on November 29th, 2019 in Oklahoma City, OK. He was born in Pine Bluff, AR on July 16th, 1944. He was raised by his parents Luther and Idabel Cummings and lived in various places across Southeast Oklahoma. He graduated from Haileyville High School in Haileyville Oklahoma in 1962.

After graduation Tom went to work for Hudgens Construction. Working in Hugo, OK he met Shirley Ann Spring at the local Dixie Dog, they were married 3 months later August 19th, 1962. 57 years later the couple celebrated their anniversary at the only Dixie Dog left in Oklahoma in 2019.

Tom worked for over 50 years as a mechanical contractor, in 1982 he went to work at Streets Inc, as a project manager. He loved working at Streets and most enjoyed the life-long friendships he made with the guys there, they were able to enjoy going to many OU bowl games and other fun times together. He retired in 2014 but still made frequent trips by the office to visit.

But more than work and his Sooners, Tom loved his family. He and Shirley moved to Tecumseh in 1969 and made their home there where they raised their 3 children. Tom was also an avid member of the Highland Church of Christ. He enjoyed helping with Tecumseh High School sporting activities and filming football games. After moving around most of his childhood Tom was happy to call Tecumseh home.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents Luther and Idabel Cummings, brother, Luther Jr. (Curly) and sister Leola.

Tom is survived by his wife of 57 years Shirley of the home, his son and daughter-in-law Tommy & Rena Cummings of Whitesboro, TX; son Michael Cummings of Tecumseh, OK; daughter and son-in-law Patty & Steve Payne of Hugo, OK. Services for Tom will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 5, 2019 at Highland Church of Christ in Tecumseh with Erick Henson, Bob McKnight and Chris Streets officiating.  Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.  The family ask that everyone wear their OU attire or something red and white to the service, and if you don’t have anything OU, well then you probably weren’t friends with Tom.
