Sally Chlouber Obituary

Sally Ann Chlouber of Shawnee was born on October 16, 1935, to Arch Bryan Barrett and Ramona Helen Odell-Barrett in Earlsboro, Oklahoma. She passed quietly through the gates of glory into the arms of her Lord on March 6, 2025.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ramona Bradley, niece Helen Freeman, and beloved husbands, Gene Stark who passed November 12, 1962, and Don Chlouber who passed on August 15, 2012.

Sally is survived by her sister Mary Willard of Midland, TX, one son Randy Stark and his wife, Katy Stark, of Guthrie, OK, three grandchildren: Barrett Stark and his wife Bethany and their daughter Sutton; Gabriel Stark and his wife Ariana; and Blaze Stark; and step-sons: Dean and his wife Jeanne Wall of Edmond, OK, Gary Chlouber of Marysville, TN, and Chris Chlouber, of Jones, OK; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Pat Chlouber, of Leadville, CO; as well as nieces Angela Claypool and her husband Chris and their family of Houston, TX, and Linda Baum and her husband Tim, of Midland, TX; Daughter-in-laws Leigh Anne Langley of Oklahoma City and Amy King of TN, and multiple grandchildren; along with nephew Drue Freeman of Yukon, OK, and his family.

Sally grew up in Harjo, Oklahoma in a family of little means, on a small family farm, with her two sisters Ramona and Mary. Sally was always a diligent worker and was the tomboy of the three, often helping her father with gardening and other farm work. She attended Harjo School, where she played basketball and enjoyed the tight knit community of students and families. In high school, Sally met Elmer Gene Stark and the two high school sweethearts were married on September 5, 1954 in Earlsboro, OK. They thoroughly enjoyed life together, with their only son Randall, until Gene’s premature death at the age of 27. This left Sally as a young widow with a 1-year-old son.

Sally returned to the farm with the loving support of her parents and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Elsie and Elmer Stark. The young mother worked a variety of jobs and raised her son until her remarriage in 1968. Sally was always very frugal, saving her Social Security benefits for years, which allowed her to send Randy to college with what she saved along with continued federal support. Sally maintained her strong work ethic as the bookkeeper of Shawnee’s Patterson Roofing and Data Bank for many years. She enjoyed wonderful relationships with her co-workers and colleagues.

Following the divorce of her second husband, Tom Straughan in 1983, Sally met Don Chlouber and the two were married on September 1, 1989, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple traveled extensively throughout the United States, enjoying cruises and trips. Sally worked with Don at Chlouber Tire and used her bookkeeping skills and frugality to tighten the purse strings and pay off debts, allowing the couple to retire early.  During retirement, the couple had many travel adventures to RV parks across the country, with Sally the designated driver, driving an enormous RV, with a full-sized vehicle in tow, covering countless miles across the US.

After Don’s death in 2012, Sally spent significantly more time with her son, his family, and several close friends. She even enjoyed traveling to California with friends and visiting the Redwood National Forest with her son Randy and grandson, Blaze. Sally came to a saving faith in her Lord Jesus Christ at a young age and was baptized at the Earlsboro Freewill Baptist church.

Sally was a member of Immanual Baptist Church in Shawnee, where she loved attending services with her husband and friends. Sally demonstrated the characteristics of a true Christian with her caring heart, positive attitude, and generosity towards others. She was a true caregiver at heart, providing care and support to her mother, mother-in-law, and late husband, all who suffered significant health issues. She provided selfless care and support for many years.

Later in life, Sally was reunited with her younger sister Mary, who lived with her for several years while she suffered with Parkinson’s disease. In late 2022, after an extended hospitalization, she returned to her home on hospice, with the support of her son, sister, and several amazing care givers that provided wonderful care to her at home for several years, which was followed by a nine-month stay in a long-term care facility.

The family wants to express our appreciation to Heartland Hospice Shawnee, The Regency Shawnee, and her special caregivers Wanda and Tiffany. With support from others, Sally’s last few years were spent surrounded with the loving care of her family and caregivers meeting all her needs.
