Mary Murrel Barnett Dwight
November 19,1923 – March 28, 2024
Mary Murrel Barnett Dwight, 100, of Shawnee, OK passed away peacefully in her sleep March 28, 2024.
Murrel was from a large close-knit family. She was preceded in death by her parents Riley Thomas Barnett and Ola Mae Bell Rider Barnett. She was also preceded by her eight sisters: Elcie Barnett Coley, Delcie Barnett Folks, Juanita Barnett Gentry, Laura Bell Barnett Davis, Naomi Barnett Winsett, Esther Barnett Carter, Ruby Barnett Lovett, and Norma Barnett Carter. She was preceded by her six brothers: William James Barnett, Rayford Barnett, Riley Austin Barnett, Ernest JD Barnett, Connie Lee Barnett, and Charley Barnett. She was preceded by her late husband Ed Dwight and her only son Allen Alfrey.
Murrel had a full life and wrote a book of her many childhood memories when she was about 92.
She grew up working hard on the family farm with her siblings and later worked at the Round House Garment Factory in Shawnee. She was among the first group of women to work at Tinker AFB. She was extremely smart and moved up in ranks quickly. That is where she met Ed Dwight, the love of her life. She and Ed spent their time between Shawnee and their home at Lake Eufaula.
If you were lucky enough to know her, you knew where she stood!
She loved and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, who will miss her greatly. She was blessed to have her niece Almeta Winsett Messick and nephew Wayne Winsett to care for her needs as she navigated her later years.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 31, 2024 and continue through service time. Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 1, 2024 at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Don Jonker, Tecumseh First Assembly of God officiating.
