LaVerne Evelyn Dawson
November 25, 1928 – January 8, 2025
LaVerne Compton Dawson of Wanette, Oklahoma passed away January 8, 2025, in Lexington, Oklahoma. She was born November 25, 1928, in Trousdale, Oklahoma. She was the sixth of seven children born to Asa L. and Maudie Reecer Compton. She attended Jumper Rural School, Trousdale High School, and graduated from Wanette High School after her parents sold the family farm. She worked as a telephone operator before her marriage. In 1949 she married Billy Joe Dawson. They made their home in Shawnee, Oklahoma and later had two sons, Kenny Ray Dawson and Mark Edward Dawson. Following the death of her husband in 1959, LaVerne worked at Sears in Shawnee and after several years moved to Wanette to be near family. She held various jobs including assistant at Wanette Public Schools, waitress at a local cafe’, and manager of the Wanette Senior Citizens Center where she worked until her retirement. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ where she faithfully attended with family and many good friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Billy Joe Dawson; parents Asa and Maudie Compton; sons Kenny Dawson and Mark Dawson; brothers Claude, Clarence, Cecil, and Clyde Compton; and sisters Lucille Suchy and Louise Kersey. She is survived by granddaughters Alisha Payne, Jennifer McClure, Melissa Dawson, and Miranda Bullock; seven great grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, and friends.
Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2025 at Cooper Funeral Home.
Service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 13, 2025 at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Jim Kelly of Asher Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at Wanette Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
