It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Charles McElfresh, 76, of Tecumseh, Oklahoma. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on March 31, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply.
Gary was born on September 20, 1949, in Canton, Oklahoma, to Herman and Rose Marie (Bailey) McElfresh. He was raised alongside his siblings, sharing many adventurous childhood memories—including a few mischievous moments that became family legends.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Vietnam veteran, dedicating three years of service. During his time in the military, he earned multiple honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Sharpshooter Badge (M-14 Rifle), and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with DVC60. His patriotism remained a defining part of his life, and he carried great pride in his service.
Gary pursued higher education at Cook County Community College in Texas, where he studied management and graduated in 1976. He went on to build a strong work ethic through various roles, including serving as a manager in the fast-food industry and later working for Pfau Tire Company. A skilled carpenter, Gary took great pride in his craftsmanship, creating beautiful pieces—including a cherished bookshelf that his wife held dear.
On May 11, 1981, Gary married the love of his life, Rhonda Parker. Together they built a life centered on love, faith, and family.
Gary was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather—fondly known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren. He found great joy in attending their activities and often joked that he might have loved the grandkids just a little more. He was a true family man who went above and beyond to provide for and spoil those he loved, ensuring they always had what they needed and more.
A man of strong faith, Gary served as a Royal Ambassadors leader and was actively involved in Promise Keepers. He also spent time as a Sunday school teacher for three-year-olds, delighting them with fresh popcorn and his warm, playful spirit.
Gary had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed camping, fishing, noodling, and family trips—especially to Garner State Park, a favorite destination known for its crystal-clear waters and cherished memories. He also loved cooking, grilling, swimming, and anything that brought his family together.
He had a passion for trains and classic cars, including his beloved Barracuda, and enjoyed dirt track racing. A die-hard Oklahoma Sooners fan and loyal Dallas Cowboys supporter—even during his time in Texas—Gary’s enthusiasm for sports was unwavering.
Known for his great sense of humor, Gary was famous for his “bad dad jokes,” humility, and warm personality. His wife lovingly compared his handsome, crinkled brown eyes to those of Sean Connery—a reflection of both his charm and character.
Gary also became known for his impressive Fourth of July fireworks displays, often rivaling the town’s own celebrations, a true testament to his patriotic spirit.
Above all, Gary loved fiercely. His legacy is one of devotion, laughter, hard work, and unwavering love for his family.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Rhonda; sons and daughters in law, Chris and Abby McElfresh, Brian and Melissa McElfresh and Matt and Heather McElfresh; brothers and sisters in law, JR and Marilee McElfresh, Ron and Helen McElfresh and Don McElfresh; sister and brother in law, Leta and Alvin Brown; grandchildren, Raylee, Gage, Peyton, Kaitlyn, Jackson, Cassidy and husband Isaiah, Wyatt, Isaac; great granddaughter Lovell and one on the way; numerous friends and loved ones.
