Frances L. "Fran" Sturgis

Frances L. “Fran” Sturgis, 90, of Tecumseh, Oklahoma passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020 in Shawnee.

She was born August 27, 1929 to Floyd and Mary (Lovell) Henson in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Fran was raised in Shawnee and graduated from Shawnee High School.  She earned her teaching degree from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma.  She has been a Tecumseh resident since 1992.

Fran married Guy Charles Sturgis, Jr. on June 4, 1948 in Shawnee, Oklahoma.  He preceded her in death October 5, 2019.

She along with her husband, Guy lived all over the world residing in Iran, Singapore, Indonesia and Midland, Texas during his career working for Halliburton in the oilfield industry.

Fran taught middle school science for Shawnee Public Schools, worked for Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Midland, TX and was a substitute teacher for Norman Public Schools.

She was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Shawnee where she taught Sunday school for adults.  Fran spent a lot of time working on genealogy and family trees on both sides of her family.  She enjoyed spending time with her daughter and grandkids and taking them on special trips.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Sturgis, Jr.; her parents, Floyd and Mary Henson; and 1 brother, Floyd Henson.             

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Walter Sheffield of Norman, OK; 3 grandchildren, W. Thor Sheffield, Guy C. Sheffield and Robert I. Sheffield; 4 great-grandchildren, Lynn, Thor, Ellen and Sophia; numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.                                               

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Alzheimers.org in lieu of flowers.

Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m., Monday, February 17, 2020 and continue through service time.  Service will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Chris Dodson of Wesley United Methodist Church in Shawnee officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
