Bernis Sturgill Obituary

Bernis “Duane” Sturgill, 69, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, just two days shy of his 70th birthday.

He was born on March 3, 1956, in Long Beach, California, to Bernis and Mary Lou Sturgill.

Duane grew up with a strong work ethic and an adventurous spirit that would carry him throughout his life. An entrepreneur by nature, Duane built a career in water and environmental well drilling, where his determination, ingenuity, and dedication helped him succeed in his field.

On July 1, 1977, Duane married the love of his life, Sharon Kay Gober. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, laughter, and shared adventures.

Duane had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life, including fishing, fly tying, grilling, landscaping, gardening, camping, and spending time at the beach. He also loved to travel and had the opportunity to explore places around the world. More than anything, Duane loved people, especially his family. He was known for his practical jokes, playful pranks, and his ability to make everyone around him laugh.

His grandchildren held a special place in his heart. Some of their fondest memories will always be sleepovers at Grandpa’s house, where he loved cooking them big breakfasts in the morning.

Duane will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, his positive attitude, his willingness to help anyone in need, and the unforgettable sound of his laughter.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Bernis and Mary Lou Sturgill, and his sister, Donna Hope Williams.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Sharon Kay Sturgill of Stigler, Oklahoma; son, Craig Sturgill and wife Becky of Warrenton, Virginia; daughter, Darci Montgomery and husband Jason of Warrenton, Virginia; and his cherished grandchildren, Caleb Montgomery, Joshua Montgomery, Jacob Montgomery, Elizabeth Sturgill, and Violet Sturgill, all of Warrenton, Virginia; brothers, Austin Sturgill and wife Karen of Harrah, Oklahoma, and Jimmy Sturgill and wife Cindy of Bethel, Oklahoma, along with numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Duane’s life was full of love, laughter, and generosity. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and devotion to family that will live on in all who knew and loved him. His presence will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday March 12, 2026, at Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh, Oklahoma. Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday March 13, 2026, at Lake Eufaula Christian Church, Eufaula, Oklahoma with Pastor Jeremy Little officiating.
